Complete information about the patents of the competitors is useful before the beginning of a new research program. Liberty of exploitation (freedom to use) has to be evaluated before the commercialization and preferably, before the development of a new product, a process, or a machine. In this case, patent applications, patents and the corresponding patents statutes of competitors must to be studied in detail. [Pg.891]

And therefore sir we desire your help for your own sakes as well as for ourselves, chiefly for the removal of two most insufferable evils daily encroaching and increasing upon us, portending and threatening inevitable destruction and confusion of yourselves, of us, and of all our posterities namely the encroachments and usurpations of the House of Lords over the commons liberties and freedoms, together with the barbarous, inhuman, blood-thirsty desires and endeavours of the Presbyterian clergy. [Pg.57]

Col. Rainborough For my part, I think we cannot engage one way or other in the Army if we do not think of the people s liberties. If we can agree where the liberty and freedom of the people lies, that will do all. [Pg.119]

And Mr Speaker, give me leave to tell you that I am confident our liberties and freedoms (the true and just end of all the late wars) are so dear and precious to us that we had rather our lives should breath out with them than to live one moment after the expiration of them. [Pg.156]

Mr Speaker, we own this honourable House as of right, the true, guardian of our liberties and freedoms and we wish and most heartily desire you would rouse up your spirits (like men of gallantry) and now at last take unto yourselves a magnanimous resolution to acquit yourselves without fear or dread like the chosen and betrusted trustees of the people, from whom (as yourselves acknowledge and declare) all just power is derived, to free us from all bondage and slavery and really and truly invest us into the price of all our blood, hazards, and toils our liberties and freedoms, the true difference and distinction of men from beasts. [Pg.156]

Mr Speaker, though my spirit is full in the sad apprehension of the dying condition of our liberties and freedoms, yet at present I shall say no more, but in the behalf of myself and my friends I shall earnestly entreat you to read these our serious apprehensions seriously and debate them deliberately. [Pg.156]

It is in the nature of terrorism that it is all too easy to create martyrs. Given the human costs involved, it is essential that, at the very least, responses to the terrorist threat do not exacerbate the problem by converting moderate opinion into extremism. It is also essential that the need to respond to terrorism does not become an excuse for significant infringements of civil liberties. Ultimately, freedom under law is surely important enough for us to tolerate the really very limited risks to our personal safety. [Pg.5]

Kleywegt, G.J., Jones, T.A. Where freedom is given, liberties are taken. Structure 3 535-540, 1995. [Pg.392]

American discussions of nuclear energy first explored civil rights and civil liberties. Dangers of theft or sabotage of a plutonium facility require drastic incursions on individual freedom (Ayers, 1975). [Pg.313]

I will not. A body broken by such folly would be no freedom, and to seek my end by such a design would be a mortal sin. Nor would it save Ned, or help Louis if he is still at liberty. All I have left is God. [Pg.193]

The Center for Cognitive Liberty Ethics (CCLE) is a nonprofit research and policy center devoted to protecting freedom of thought. Our mission is to develop and implement social policies that preserve and enhance freedom of thought into the 21st century. [Pg.2]

Hornberger, Jacob G. Gun Control, Patriotism, and Civil Disobedience. Freedom Daily, 1991, n.p. in Hornberger, Jacob G., ed. The Tyranny of Gun Control. Fairfax, Va. Future of Freedom Foundation, 1997. Also available online. URL http //www.fff.org/freedom/0591a.asp. Posted in May 1991. Asserts that resistance to gun control is an aspect of civil disobedience that is often needed to preserve liberty against government encroachment. [Pg.161]

In this type of application, one often does not try to determine the degrees of liberty correctly. Some authors [11,39] simply use the value 2 for tcritical- The tcritical value (a=0.05) really depends on the number of degrees of freedom but tends to 2, especially when the number of degrees of freedom becomes larger. [Pg.118]

It can mean having liberty or permission to act and in this sense the word empowerment has crept into the management jargon. Empowering people typically means giving them the freedom to do things their way or to pursue their own ideas, often in association with an attempt to establish a climate in which creativity and initiative can flourish. [Pg.206]

The 1990 Supreme Court decision in Employment Division v. Smith said that the religious use of peyote by Native Americans is not protected by the First Amendment. This decision was met with the outcry of many religious and civil liberties groups, which led to two legislative acts the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 and the American Indian Religious Freedom Act Amendments (AIRFA). Amended again in 1996, AIRFA allowed for the same protection for the traditional, ceremonial use of peyote by American Indians in all 50 states. [Pg.322]

The chemical potential of a homogeneous material (a phase) is a function of two intensive variables, usually chosen as temperature and pressure. We say that such a material has two degrees of freedom (i.e., we are free to set two intensive variables). (Note that only intensive variables count as degrees of freedom.) In addition to being able to specify a number of intensive variables equal to the number of degrees of freedom of a system, we are also at liberty to specify the size of the phase with one extensive variable. The chemical potential can be represented as a surface on a plot of p versus P and T. The condition for equilibrium between phase a and phase p is, according to Eq. (24),... [Pg.169]

All in all, the relation between internal realism and relativism seems to be this. Internal realism does not imply relativism. It rules out certain forms of relativism, but does not refute all versions of the doctrine. One of the reasons why people may find relativism fascinating is that it seems to justify human freedom. They fear that the idea of absolute truth is linked to intellectual dictatorship. I think this fear is misplaced. Truth alone does not infringe on people s right to believe what they like. Only other people can do that. Since internal realism is committed to fallibilism, it gives us reasons for not constraining intellectual liberty in the name of truth. For we might not possess the truth. [Pg.132]
