By the early 1970s, the art of oligosaccharide synthesis had reached a remarkable level, so that chemical syntheses of practical amounts of various blood-group-related ohgosaccharides became feasible, including the Lewis determinants. Within the present article, a few selected examples are provided ofboth classical and more recent glycosylation methods applied to the synthesis of sLcL sLe", or of sulfated Lewis determinants. Recent procedures involve the use of glycal donors as developed by Danishefsky and his associates, of glycosyl fluorides according to Mukaiyama and Nicolaou, of sulfoxide donors as reported by Kahne, and enzyme-catalyzed oligosaccharide syntheses as developed by the schools of Whitesides, Wong, and Paulson. ... 

Lewis determined the formulas of simple ionic compounds (such as NaCl) by theorizing that atoms gain electrons if the outermost cube is more than half full, and lose electrons if the cube is less that half-full (tmtil the cube is either full or empty). Sodium, for example, loses the one electron in its outermost cube at the same time that chlorine gains the electron it needs to fill its outermost cube. 

The glycal assembly logic was also applied to the synthesis of Lewis determinants [136], blood group determinants [137] and tumor antigens, as for the synthesis of 38, a hexasaccha-ride glycosphingolipid [138] which is a breast tumor associated antigen of biological relevance (Fig. 3).
