In the "maximum level" averaging procedure described in "TA Larm" (1968) the maximum sound level which occurs in each time interval of duration t (as a rule t = 5 sec but for purposes of audiometry in industry, more particularly for protecting people at work against noise t = 3 sec) is used for determining the equivalent continuous level. Another area where controlled-potential coulometry has found application is in nuclear chemistry, in which elements such as uranium and polonium can be determined at trace levels. Eor example, microgram quantities of uranium in a medium of H2SO4 can be determined by reducing U(VI) to U(IV) at a mercury working electrode. [Pg.502]

These improvements are more likely to occur at the program and element level. For example, at one chemical company a group of senior operators took an initiative to redesign the work permit process that reduced the number of forms required, reduced the time required to issue a permit from an average of two hours to 30 minutes and improved the workplace monitoring needed to ensure a safe work environment. The reduction in the time to issue permits increased maintenance productivity by at least 10 percent, by reducing maintenance worker time spent waiting for permits. The second law of thermodynamics states that energy exists at various levels and is available for use only if it can move from a higher to a lower level. Many endpoint detection systems, based on mechanisms, such as those based on reflected optical light [9], spindle motor current [10], pad temperature [11,12], have been used to resolve this problem, with limited success.
