Himdin [8001-27-2] is a polypeptide of 66 amino acids found ia the saUvary gland secretions of the leech Himdo medicinalis (45). It is a potent inhibitor of thrombin and biads to y-thrombia with a dissociation constant of 0.8 x 10 ° M to 2.0 x lO " M. Himdin forms a stable noncovalent complex with free and bound thrombin completely iadependent of AT-III. This material has now been cloned and expressed ia yeast cells (46,47). Its antigenic poteatial ia humans remains to be estabUshed.

When studying heterogeneous equilibria involving clathrates, one is faced with peculiar difficulties owing to the hysteresis effects mentioned in the introduction the solute in a clathrate crystal of hydroquinone, for instance, will not come to thermodynamic equilibrium with the vapor in which it is placed. Consequently it is impossible, or at least very difficult, to measure the equilibrium vapor pressure of the solute in a clathrate by placing some crystals in a tensometer (cf. the experiments of Wynne-Jones and Anderson,58 and those of Leech and Richards reported by Powell33). 

Hirudin is a polypeptide derived from the saliva of the leech Hirudo medicinalis that binds to the blood serine proteinase, thrombins, and thus blocks clot formation.

Until the recent development of appropriate HPLC techniques capable of detecting pmol amounts (see Flentge et al. 1997) ACh could only be measured chemically by relatively lengthy and expensive procedures (e.g. gas chromotography), which were not always very sensitive, or by bioassays. Although the latter, using muscle preparations that responded to ACh, such as the dorsal muscle of the leech, the rectus abdominus of the frog or certain clam hearts, were reasonably sensitive they were tiresome and not easily mastered. Thus studies on the release and turnover of ACh have not been as easy as for the monoamines.
