The objective of this chapter is to reduce the learning curve for the application of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, or indeed any process analytical technology, to the chemical industry. It attempts to communicate realistic expectations for process analyzers in order to minimize both unrealistically positive expectations (e.g. NIR can do everything and predict the stock market ) and unrealistically negative expectations (e.g. NIR never works don t waste your money ). A follow-up audit should be conducted after an appropriate period following the implementation. The objectives of this audit are to verify that recommended actions remain in place, and are still working as intended. It also presents an opportunity to review the retention of the lessons learned and to identify any practices, knowledge or awareness items that are being lost. The audit should therefore consider whether the lessons learned were communicated as appropriate throughout the company and to others in the industry. 

There are many brilliant men and women who are excellent teachers and scientists, can analyze the most complex data, and can draw the most complex molecules or mathematical equations. Yet, many of these same people cannot communicate the shapes of even simple items on a piece of paper. In addition to this complication, when an object is made of glass, new complications are created. These new problems typically derive from the fact that working with glass is like working with no other material on earth. Thus, the average person will try to rationalize construction with materials they are more familiar with, such as wood or metal. In addition, it is unlikely that this average person will have had the opportunity to learn the parameters and limitations of glassware construction. 

The use of quality as the means of communicating the program between workers, management, and outside parties is very important since this has been the language of business for many years. It is very important that the sustainability program learns to translate many of its objectives and targets into the well-known language.
