But it is not the last page of the story. I have relegated the details of the science part of my drug research to the appendix. There you will find a more detailed technical account of the studies described in earlier chapters. Some of the specifics of our drug studies have never been publicly disseminated and if you are scientifically inclined, you will want to read the details. Up to now, this book has been a subjective presentation of my own experiences and opinions. The appendix, however, is a more impersonal compilation of what we learned -information that should be made available to the research community. Viewed dispassionately, it is certainly of greater importance than my personal story. But as you have probably judged by now, I usually have more fun talking about myself ...

This initial finding of abnormal hippocampal function during memory retrieval in schizophrenia has been clarified by several subsequent studies. First, patients with schizophrenia rely less on the recruitment of the hippocampus and show more widespread activation of the prefrontal cortex during the retrieval of previously learned information (Weiss et al., 2003). Second, the ability to classify new items as previously not experienced is impaired in schizophrenia and is associated with decreased activation and smaller volume of the hippocampus (Weiss et al., 2004). Third, hippocampal recruitment in schizophrenia is impaired specifically during a relational, but not during a nonrelational memory task (Ongur et al., 2006). 

In a traditional sense, plant pathologists seek to prevent disease in economically important crops and to this end we often study why an organism is successful. Ideally we hope to learn information that will be useful in the application of disease control measures. The subject of this volume is the control of weeds through the use of plant pathogens. Thus, the goal is quite different from that of traditional pathology as we are attempting to ensure the success of a disease...

Interest in IDO and TDO originated many years ago, but there is much yet to learn. Information on the mechanism of NFK formation, structures for new enzymes, the similarities and differences with other heme proteins, and the controlling roles of individual residues all have to be firmly established. As the physiological roles become more firmly embedded, it is likely that these enzymes will continue to attract attention.
