Leak Detection and Location

Currently, MTGs read the vacuum ranges 10 2 to 10 8 torr and, with modem electronics, have demonstrated remarkable accuracy and sensitivity (+1% accuracy in the 10 2- to 10 5-torr range).64

Leak detection and leak location using radiotracer techniques are probably the most widespread applications of radiotracers in industrial troubleshooting. Leaks create problems in process plants or in pipelines, spoil the quality of the final product or reduce the capacity of oil and gas pipelines and contamination of surface or ground water and soil could also happen (IAEA, 2009) (IAEA, 2004). 

For leak detection and leak location in buried pipes the so called "pig technique" is used. Here the pig means a sensor for detecting and recording radiation signals from inside the pipeline. Radiation detection pag consists of a detector and data logger assembled together inside a compact watertight cylinder. Pig moves inside the pipelines.

The pipes in water distribution and transmission systems are difficult to inspect for damage due to their location below the surface of the ground. This difficulty has led water utilities to rely on techniques such as breakage records, leak detection, and water audits to determine the health of their systems. While these techniques have been shown to be very useful in prioritizing repairs and replacements, they have the disadvantage of being reactive in nature. In each case, problems with the water system only become apparent after the pipes have failed in some manner [7].

Electric cables that detect liquid leaks are available. They can be run through areas where leaks are possible, and they indicate the presence and location of a leak. 

The site conditions for an on-site landfill, such as location, geology, hydrogeology, physiography, climate, and so on, should also be suitable. Landfill should meet the minimum technology requirements and regulations for hazardous waste landfills such as double liners and leachate collection and removal systems, leak detection systems, closure procedures and final cover, and construction quality assurance.59...
