Leaf, Philip

The curry leaf plant is highly valued for its characteristic aroma and medicinal value (Philip, 1981). A number of leaf essential oil constituents and carbazole alkaloids have been extracted from the plant (Mallavarapu et al., 1999). There are a large number of oxygenated mono- and sesquiterpenes present, e.g. c/s-ocimene (34.1%), a-pinene (19.1%), y-terpinene (6.7%) and P-caryophyllene (9.5%), which appear to be responsible for the intense odour associated with the stalk and flower parts of curry leaves (Onayade and Adebajo, 2000). In fresh bay leaves, 1, 8-cineole is the major component, together with a-terpinyl acetate, sabinene, a-pinene, P-pinene, P-elemene, a-terpineol, linalool and eugenol (Kilic et al., 2004).

The LD50 of a hydroalcoholic extract of heart-leaf sida in mice is 2.639 g/kg after intraperitoneal administration and could not be determined at doses up to 5 g/kg after oral administration (Franco et al. 2005). Similarly, the oral LD50 of a methanol extract could not be determined at doses up to 5 g/kg in mice (Philip and Venkataraman 2001). 

No adverse effects were reported in mice chronically administered an oral dose of 500 mg/kg of a methanol extract of heart-leaf sida (Philip and Venkataraman 2001).

Maize (Zea mays L. CV. COl) s eds were grown in soil-filled plastic trays in dark for 2 days. The pots were then transferred to continuous illumination (55p mol m S " ) at 28 2°C. After 7 days of growth/ 15 segments/ each measuring 1 cm X 3 cm, were excised from the second leaf and incubated on 4 layers of moist filter papers at 28 2 C. Detached leaf segments were allowed to age for 3 days. The leaf segments in separate petridishes were irradiated with either philips...
