Safety is one business management or leadership principle that requires bottom-up involvement. The guiding principle of metric development is to have a stable system or process to collect, review, and draw conclusions. Textbooks and educational courses may provide the principles of leadership, but it is human application and successes that identify the leader. Leaders are people who need to take responsibility for running an organization, at the same time as accommodating factors beyond their control. 

Thanks to the leadership of Lewis and his colleagues, the chemical engineering department became an intellectually powerful center during this period. Its preeminence was fostered by the publication of the pioneer text in 1923, Principles of Chemical Engineering, by Walker, Lewis, and William H. McAdams.
