Without a guiding theory or set of principles, it is difficult to design and refine procedures to stay on course. This was the theme of Deming s four-day workshops on Quality, Productivity, and Competitive Position. Covey (1989,1990) emphasizes the same point in his popular books The Seven Habits cf Highly Effective People, Principle-Centered Leadership and First Things First co-authored by Merrill and Merrill (1994). [Pg.21]

Thanks to the leadership of Lewis and his colleagues, the chemical engineering department became an intellectually powerful center during this period. Its preeminence was fostered by the publication of the pioneer text in 1923, Principles of Chemical Engineering, by Walker, Lewis, and William H. McAdams. At the same time, Lewis developed a new kind of relation with industry, one that proved to have enormous impact on the chemical process industries and on teaching and research in academia. In fact, petroleum refining was the industry that provided the key to many future developments in chemical engineering. [Pg.45]

As far back as the Babylonian Empire, a strong foundational leadership centering on justice moved society toward safety initiatives. From Hammurabi s Code addressing the liability of homebuilders in an eye for an eye justice system, the concern for safety was viewed as a just duty. Persons placed in leadership roles had a duty originating from a virtue of justice, to consider the safety of those around them. In modern studies of leadership, justice is considered a foundational virtue of leaders. Leaders must display a sense of justice that is viewed as moral by those that they lead. Safety is indeed one of those principles that come from the virtue of justice. Leaders must display a sincere effort for subordinate and peer safety or risk moral decay of their credibility. [Pg.407]
