Friction can now be probed at the atomic scale by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) (see Section VIII-2) and the surface forces apparatus (see Section VI-4) these approaches are leading to new interpretations of friction [1,1 a,lb]. The subject of friction and its related aspects are known as tribology, the study of surfaces in relative motion, from the Greek root tribos meaning mbbing. [Pg.431]

The oxidation reaction between butadiene and oxygen and water in the presence of CO2 or SO2 produces 1,4-butenediol. The catalysts consist of iron acetylacetonate and LiOH (99). The same reaction was also observed at 90°C with Group (VIII) transition metals such as Pd in the presence of I2 or iodides (100). The butenediol can then be hydrogenated to butanediol [110-63-4]. The fact that the isomeric structure of azolides is thermodynamically controlled has been used by Olofson and Kendall to prepare 1-alkylazoles regioselectively (70JOC2246). An asymmetric pyrazole yields two alkylated derivatives (Scheme 21 see Section 4.04.2.1.3 (viii)), but the alkylation with a powerful alkylating agent of the acetylated derivative leads to the less abundant isomer via the salt (249), which is too unstable to be isolated. [Pg.232]

The connection that has been shown in Section VIII to exist between burn-out in a rod bundle and in an annulus leads to the question of whether or not a link may also exist between, for example, a round tube and an annulus. Now, a round tube has its cross section defined uniquely by one dimension—its diameter therefore if a link exists between a round tube and an annulus section, it must be by way of some suitably defined equivalent diameter. Two possibilities that immediately appear are the hydraulic diameter, dw = d0 — dt, and the heated equivalent diameter, dh = (da2 — rf,2)/ however, there are other possible definitions. To resolve the issue, Barnett (B4) devised a simple test, which is illustrated by Figs. 38 and 39. These show a plot of reliable burn-out data for annulus test sections using water at 1000 psia. Superimposed are the corresponding burn-out lines for round tubes of different diameters based on the correlation given in Section VIII. It is clearly evident that the hydraulic and the heated equivalent diameters are unsuitable, as the discrepancies are far larger than can be explained by any inaccuracies in the data or in the correlation used. [Pg.273]
