LEAD IODIDE.231 POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE

Kuroda and Suzuki used reaction of 267a with 2-bromoaniline leading to anilide 312 as the first step of their sequence in the preparation of 1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-4(5//)-ones (Scheme 77) (91TL6915). Reaction of 267a with amines usually does not require any catalyst and/or base, but in this case use of sodium hydride was reported. The anilide 312 was sequentially alkylated, first with methyl iodide in ethanol with potassium hydroxide at room temperature and then with different alkyl iodides in acetone at reflux to provide intermediate 313. This compound was then cyclized via palladium catalyzed reaction leading to product 314. This reaction provides a new entry to l//-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-4(5//)-ones that are of current interest as antiasthmatic agents. [Pg.199]

For purification, the crystalline hexaatomic sulfur is dissolved in benzene (approx. 100 mg./l.) toluene is not suitable (see Properties). The benzene solution is extracted with a series of reagents, three or four extractions being made with each reagent except where otherwise indicated. (For 200 ml. of benzene solution, 50-ml. portions of reagent are used). The reagents are employed in the following order (1) water, (2) 10% aqueous potassium triiodide, until the benzene phase remains colored from iodine, (3) 10% aqueous potassium iodide, (4) water, (5) 5% aqueous lead acetate, twice, (6) water, (7) 5 % aqueous potassium hydroxide, once, (8) water. The purified solution is dried over magnesium sulfate and should be used immediately. Lead triphenyl iodide. —If the mother-liquors of the above bromide be treated with potassium iodide, and the product obtained crystallised from water, the iodide separates in pale yellow prisms, which sinter at 189 C. and melt sharply at 142 C. to a canary yellow liquid, which soon deposits lead iodide. It is difficultly soluble in liot methyl alcohol, and insoluble in water, and is distinguished from all the other lead aryl or alkyl iodides by its stability. It does not appear to yield an oxide with alcoholic sodium or potassium hydroxide, but a white precipitate is thrown down, this yielding lead triphenyl chloride with 50 per cent, hydrochloric acid. [Pg.344]
