Lead flake is used in exterior primers, where it exhibits excellent durability and rust inhibition. [Pg.91]

Some pigments are used for the special properties they give a coating rather than for their color or opacity. Two that have been mentioned in the metallic pigment category are zinc dust and lead flake, which are used primarily for mst inhibition. Others are discussed in the following paragraphs. [Pg.91]

Lead azide is not readily dead-pressed, ie, pressed to a point where it can no longer be initiated. However, this condition is somewhat dependent on the output of the mixture used to ignite the lead azide and the degree of confinement of the system. Because lead azide is a nonconductor, it may be mixed with flaked graphite to form a conductive mix for use in low energy electric detonators. A number of different types of lead azide have been prepared to improve its handling characteristics and performance and to decrease sensitivity. In addition to the dextrinated lead azide commonly used in the United States, service lead azide, which contains a minimum of 97% lead azide and no protective colloid, is used in the United Kingdom. Other varieties include colloidal lead azide (3—4 pm), poly(vinyl alcohol)-coated lead azide, and British RE) 1333 and RE) 1343 lead azide which is precipitated in the presence of carboxymethyl cellulose (88—92). [Pg.10]

The hydrogen and oxygen produced create a safety hazard. Beyond that, they can cause Pb, Pb02, and PbS04 to flake off the plates. In a modem maintenance-free battery, the lead plates are alloyed with small amounts of calcium, which inhibits the electrolysis reaction. [Pg.502]

Table II shows that houses in the reference area contained significantly more lead paint than houses around either the RSR or Dixie site, while the RSR area contained more than the Dixie area. Based on a visual inspection, the paint on the walls and trim areas was Intact and was not peeling, flaking, or otherwise deteriorating. Fibers may also have disadvantages. An increase in the number of fibers in the cement leads to an increase in the porosity and permeability of the cement, resulting in the decrease of compressive strength. During the acid treatment of the formation, the fibers in the cement can be easily dislodged and extracted from cracks as smooth flakes leaving pore spaces [1759]. [Pg.134]
