It is also known that small quantities of some compound could significantly reduce strengths and deteriorate the properties of cement solidified waste. That could be in the form of setting reduction, which could lead to the material disintegration and leaching. Examples of some waste components, which could give opposite effect to the cement stabilization, are given in Table 2. [Pg.166]

Nickel and Cobalt. Often present with copper in sulfuric acid leach Hquors are nickel [7440-02-0] and cobalt [7440-48-4]. Extraction using an organophosphoric acid such as D2EHPA at a moderate (3 to 4) pH can readily take out the nickel and cobalt together, leaving the copper in the aqueous phase, but the cobalt—nickel separation is more difficult (274). In the case of chloride leach Hquors, separation of cobalt from nickel is inherently simpler because cobalt, unlike nickel, has a strong tendency to form anionic chloro-complexes. Thus cobalt can be separated by amine extractants, provided the chloride content of the aqueous phase is carefully controUed. A successhil example of this approach is the Falcon-bridge process developed in Norway (274). [Pg.81]

A.lkaline Solutions. The most important example of alkaline leach is the digestion of hydrated alumina from bauxite by a sodium hydroxide solution at 160-170°C, ie, the Bayer process (see Aluminumand aluminum alloys). [Pg.170]

Bacterial leaching is another example of oxidizing dissolution whereby specific bacteria either directiy attack the sulfide mineral or indirectiy enhance the regeneration of the oxidant. [Pg.170]

Another important example is the leaching of nickel sulfide under ammonia and oxygen pressure to form hexaammine nickel (Sherritt-Gordon process). [Pg.171]

Sulfur dioxide is usefiil as a solvent for sulfur trioxide in sulfonation reactions for example, in the large-scale production of alkylbenzenesulfonate surfactant (329). A newer use for sulfur dioxide is in cyanide detoxification in connection with cyanide leaching of precious metals from mine dumps. [Pg.148]

Aeration must be avoided since it can oxidize and resolubiUze the cemented (precipitated) impurities. Filter presses are used after each step and the cakes are leached to recover various values. For example, cadmium is dissolved, recemented with zinc, and recovered on site either electrolyticaHy or by distillation. A copper residue of 25—60% copper is sold for recovery elsewhere. The other impurities cannot be recovered economically with the exception of cobalt in some plants. [Pg.403]

The endless-belt percolator (Wakeman, loc. cit.) is similar in principle, but the successive feed, solvent spray, drainage, and dumping stations are hnearly rather than circulany disposed. Examples are the de Smet belt extractor (uncompartmented) and the Lurgi frame belt (compartmented), the latter being a kind of linear equivalent of the Rotocel.
