Laurinal

In 1978 Hiils (Mumcu et al ) described the properties of a block copolymer prepared by condensation of polytetramethylene ether glycol with laurin lactam and decane-1,10-dicarboxylic acid. The materials were introduced as XR3808 and X4006. The polyamide XR3808 is reported to have a specific gravity of 1.02, a yield stress of 24 MPa, a modulus of elasticity of 300 MPa and an elongation of break of 360%. Erfume base to the extent of from 1 to 2 per cent. The alcohols may used in quantities up to 5 per cent. Laurinic alcohol is very suitable as a basis for perfumes of the lily type, owing to its delicate odour it has, moreover, very powerful fixative properties.

Another method of prepn of acetyl laurin is to treat triacetin (see under Acetins), in the presence of an alkaline catalyst with lauric acid to replace one of the acetyl groups. The AcOH produced by the reaction can be removed by azeotropic distn using sufficient hydrocarbon solvent to maintain the distn temp at ca 200°... 

One of the most interesting processes in electrically initiated polymerization was an initiation with the solvated electron proposed by Laurin and Parravano (22), who studied electro-anionic polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine in liquid ammonia solution of alkali metal salts in the temperature range — 33 to — 78° C. Rapid and efficient polymerization occurred and conversions of monomer to polymers formed exclusively at the cathode in the form of an orange-red, porous, solid deposit, suggesting the formation of a pile of living polymers.
