Emser Werke

In 1978 Hiils (Mumcu et al ) described the properties of a block copolymer prepared by condensation of polytetramethylene ether glycol with laurin lactam and decane-1,10-dicarboxylic acid. The materials were introduced as XR3808 and X4006. The polyamide XR3808 is reported to have a specific gravity of 1.02, a yield stress of 24 MPa, a modulus of elasticity of 300 MPa and an elongation of break of 360%. Another amorphous nylon was developed at Emser Werke AG and is based on aliphatic, as well as cycloaliphatic, amines and terephthalic acid. It is marketed in Europe under the tradename Grilamid 55 and until recently was distributed in the United States by Union Carbide under the tradename Amidel. These amorphous nylons are not as tough as nylon 6 or 6,6, but they do offer transparency and good chemical resistance in some environments.

Judging from the dates of their patents, Huels lactam research began around 1959 and continued through 1964. Huels early lactam work is reported to have been done in cooperation with Emser. Initial research was done by Muller and Weber. Later process improvements were chiefly by Strauss. They were the first to come to market with Nylon 12, starting up a 1200 T unit in 1966 at Marl, West Germany. Their monomer plant was set up in cooperation with Emser Werke. The major suppliers of nylon terpolymers are Bostik Division of Emhart Corp., Emser-Werke, and Rilsan Corp., Div. of Atochem. 

Film is obtained by extruding terpolymers such as nylon 6, 6-6, 12 (Rilsan, Emser-Werke) or nylon 6, 6-9, 6-12 (Bostik) on re-... 

The manufacturers of polyamides ofler them in various forms. Rilsan Corp. supplies the basic nylon polymers as well as powders and monofilaments. Bostik Fastening Systems Group provides the polymers in pellet form, but also as powder, spun bonded web, and film. Emser-Werke supplies pellets and powders. 

European suppliers include Emser-Werke (see Table 16), Dynamit Nobel, and Huels.
