Language impairment

Another gene-related disease is known as specific language impairment (SLI) where individuals with general intelligence have lowered linguistic ability. SLI is believed to be related to a gene found on chromosome 7. [Pg.343]

Autism is an interesting model for the study of consciousness. The combination of social isolation, language impairment and restricted, repetitive interests and behaviours together with idiosyncratic patterns in attention, concentration and interpersonal behaviour offer opportunities for the exploration of certain aspects of consciousness ... [Pg.313]

Frontotemporal dementia (LTD) is one of the common forms of primary degenerative dementias after Alzheimer s disease and can affect presenile individuals. It is a clinically heterogeneous disorder characterized by alterations in language and/or behavior. Rarely it may be associated with Parkinsonism or amyotrophy. Several aspects affect the extent and character of taste and smell. People differ considerably in sensitivity and appreciation of smell and taste, and there is lack of a common language to describe smell and taste experiences. A hereditary or genetic factor may cause a variation between individual reactions, eg, phenylthiourea causes a bitter taste sensation which may not be perceptible to certain people whose general abiUty to distinguish other tastes is not noticeably impaired (17). The variation of pH in saUva, which acts as a buffer and the charge carrier for the depolarization of the taste cell, may influence the perception of acidity differently in people (15,18). Enzymes in saUva can cause rapid chemical changes in basic food ingredients, such as proteins and carbohydrates, with variable effects on the individual. [Pg.10]

Patients with adult-onset schizophrenia have been shown to have subtle but demonstrable impairments in premorbid language as well as in motor and social development (Davies et ah, 1998), and a poor outcome in schizophrenia is correlated with more pronounced early developmental abnormalities. Several independent studies have found that very early-onset schizophrenia is associated with similar but more pronounced abnormalities (Watkins et ah, 1988 Alaghband-Rad et ah, 1995 Holhs, 1995). [Pg.189]
