Most extmded latex fibers are double covered with hard yams in order to overcome deficiencies of the bare threads such as abrasiveness, color, low power, and lack of dyeabiUty. During covering, the elastic thread is wrapped under stretch which prevents its return to original length when the stretch force is removed thus the fiber operates farther on the stress—strain curve to take advantage of its higher elastic power. Covered mbber fibers are commonly found in narrow fabrics, braids, surgical hosiery, and strip lace. [Pg.310]

The original yams were marketed as silk substitutes for use in apparel, hosiery, lace, home furnishings, ribbons, braids, and in a whole range of fabrics using blends with cotton or wool yams. As the end uses expanded beyond silk replacement, the harsh metallic luster of the yam proved disadvantageous and dull "matt" fibers had to be developed. Ghlorpropham. (3-Chlorophenyl)carbamic acid 1-methyl ester [101-21-3] (Chlorpropham, CJPC) (21) was patended in the early 1950s and is a carbamate. Its only use in the United States is on stored Irish potatoes to inhibit bud development. The potatoes, which are generally stored at temperatures >10° C for maximum flavor, are treated by passing a stream of air laced with chloropropham over the potatoes for 48 hours after which the potatoes are purged with pure air. [Pg.424]

Latex continues to drip after the initial collection and coagulates naturally in the cup to form cup lump. Coagulum which forms as a film of latex on the tapped cut, called tree lace, or from latex that has dripped onto the ground, called earth scrap, is collected the next day along with the cup lump. The solubility of potassium heptafluorotantalate in hydrofluoric acid decreases from 60 g/100 mL at 100°C to 0.5 g/100 mL at room temperature. The different solubility characteristics of K TaF and K NbOF are the fundamental basis of the Matignac process (16). A phase diagram exists for the system K TaF —NaCl—NaF—KCl (68). Potassium heptafluorotantalate has an LD q value of 2500 mg/kg. The recommended TWA maximum work lace exposure for K TaF in air is 2.5 mg /m (fluoride base) (69). [Pg.332]

The less simple polymers (like the epoxies, the polyesters and the formaldehyde-based resins) are networks each chain is cross-linked in many places to other chains, so that, if stretched out, the array would look like a piece of Belgian lace, somehow woven in three dimensions. These are the thermosets if heated, the structure softens but it does not melt the cross-links prevent viscous flow.
