Label systems

Many labeling systems have been used for dalbaheptide stmctures. The one used herein, where each of the seven amino acids is identified by a number (see Table 2) and each atom by a letter, is widely appHed because it permits easy comparison of and nmr data (31). The lUPAC system, utilised in Chemicaly hstracts and generally in the description of semisynthetic derivatives, requires decodification for comparison of different dalbaheptides (83). 

A Reliability Block Diagram (RBD - ANSl/lEEE Std 352-1975) while laid out similarly to a flow diagram, represents the components as a series of interconnecting blocks. The best labeling system in this regard is isotopic labeling since it involves the minimum change from the standard initiator. Methods based on radiolabeling and stable isotopes detectable by NMR are described in Sections 3.5.4.1 and 3.5.4.2 respectively.

Often where direct data capture systems are employed in the analytical laboratory, an additional bar code or sequential labelling system may be incorporated and could be added to this system to ensure complete union with the analytical laboratory receiving the samples.

The elements that form only one cation are the alkali metals (group IA), the alkaline earth metals (group IIA), zinc, cadmium, aluminum, and most often silver. The charge on the ions that these elements form in their compounds is always equal to their periodic table group number (or group number minus 10 in the newest labeling system in the periodic table).
