Enantioselective aldol reactions also can be used to create arrays of stereogenic centers. Two elegant ot-amino anion approaches have recently been published. Fujie Tanaka and Carlos F. Barbas III of the Scripps Institute, La Jolla, have shown (Org. Lett. 2004,6,3541) that L-proline catalyzes the addition of the aldehyde 6 to other aldehydes with high enantio- and diastereocontroJ. Keiji Maruoka of Kyoto University has developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2004,126,9685) a chiral phase transfer catalyst that mediates the addition of the ester 9 to aldehydes, again with high enantio- and diastcrcocontrol. [Pg.81]

The current version of the vector is available from C. F. Barbas III at the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic, 10666 North Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, CA 92037. This vector contains a number of modifications in the promoter regions designed to minimize recombination. In addition, the vector contains two different stuffer fragments (1200 and 300 bp) in the insertion sites, which is an improvement over using the TT antibody clone as the parent vector. [Pg.472]

Barba and his colleagues sampled the three outcrops of limestone to determine their distinctive signatures. This information was compared to lumps of calcium carbonate found in the finished plaster in the city. The group of scientists used several different techniques to examine the samples. The major element composition of the geological samples was determined by XRF. The major element composition of the lumps was determined by SEM-EDS. Trace element composition was determined by LA-ICP-MS (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) to measure the elemental composition of the plaster and the limestone. This methodology is well suited for analyses of very small lumps with microscopic spot sizes. The LA-ICP-MS method is able to analyze a large number of trace and rare earth elements with speed, precision, and high resolution, especially in cases where the major chemical composition does not appear to be particularly distinctive. The instrument worked extremely well for the characterization and determination of the provenance of the Ume plaster source material. [Pg.67]

Barbas and researchers identified that the diamine la TFA salt can catalyse the asymmetric intermolecular direct aldol reactions of a,a-dialkylaldehydes with aromatic aldehydes (Scheme 9.2). The bifunctional catalytic system exhibited excellent reactivity to give products with moderate diastereo- and enantioselectivities. Notably, L-proline is an ineffective catalyst for this class of aldol reactions. The re-face attack of an enamine intermediate on an aryl aldehyde was proposed, causing the observed stereochemistry. [Pg.201]

The Barbas group further identified catalyst Id for asymmetric Michael additions using brine as the reaction medium 10 mol% diamine Id/TFA at ambient temperature afforded q n-Michael adducts in high yields and good to excellent stereoselectivities for cyclic ketones. The stereoselectivities decreased when aliphatic aldehydes were used as donors (Scheme 9.13). Moreover, the same authors demonstrated the first example of sym-metrical/unsymmetrical a,a-diallgrlaldehydes as donors in asymmetric Michael reactions to produce adducts featuring an all-carbon quaternary stereocentre. The use of 30 mol% (S )-l-(2-pyrrolidinylmethyl)pyrrolidine la in combination with an equal amount of TFA yielded products with moderate to high levels of diastereo- and enantioselectivity (Scheme 9.14). ... [Pg.208]

This is by far the largest class of organocatalytic domino processes and leads to a great diversity of highly functionahzed and complex molecules. In terms of Class 1 processes that lead to cyclization. Class lA are the most populous. For example, Barbas and Bui described a Robinson annulation for the synthesis of the Wieland-Miescher ketone discussed in Sect. 1.5.1.1 using L-proline 45 (Scheme 1.37) [54]. [Pg.31]

In parallel, Sanchez-Barba and coworkers also reported a related family of hybrid scorpionate/cyclopentadienyl Mg species, bpzcpjMgR (R = Me, 47 Et, 48 Bu, 49 tBu, 50 CH2SiMe3 51, Bn, 52) (Fig. 14) [69]. These complexes were moderately competent for the ROP of cyclic esters, and their behavior was reminiscent of that of the non-bulky heteroscorpionate-supported initiators the authors had previously described [67]. The polymerization of 500 equiv of CL proceeded smoothly (0-20 °C, 1-10 min) with 51, but was much more sluggish with the other complexes (2-48 h, 20-70 °C) the polydispersity was usually in the range 1.19-1.49. Complex 51, the most efficient initiator in this series, also enabled the ROP of l-LA (200 equiv) in a controlled fashion at 90 °C in toluene (2.5 h) or at 65 °C in THE (5 h) the polydispersity of the resulting PLLAs was low (M /M 1.02-1.15) and the molecular weight of the material was fully predictable on the basis of monomer-to-metal ratio (Mn,obs 34 caic 5,800-27,600 g mol-i). The ROP of d,l-LA was even slower (conversion <59 % after 8 h at 90 °C) but only returned atactic PLA. [Pg.162]

An impressive array of new catalysts for enantioselective homologation have been reported. Carlos F. Barbas 111 of Scripps/La Jolla has found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 5572) that the commercial amino acid 3 mediated the addition of dibydroxyacetone 2 to an aldehyde such as 1 to give the triol 4 with high enantio- and diastereocontrol. Takashi Ooi ofNagoya University has devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007,129, 12392) the catalyst 6 for the anti addition (Henry reaction) of nitro alkanes such as 5 to aldehydes. Takayoshi Arai of Chiba University has developed (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 3595) a complementary catalyst (not shown) that mediated syn addition. Jonathan A. EUman of the University of California, Berkeley has uncovered (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007,129,15110) the catalyst 10 for the aza-Henry reaction. Yian Shi of Colorado State University has found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007,129,11688) hgands for Pd that direct the absolute sense of the addition of 13 to dienes such as 12. [Pg.80]
