NITRERGIC STIMULANTS mimic, or cause the production and release of nitric oxide (NO), which is an important mediator that is synthesized on demand. The actions of nitric oxide are very widespread, and imbalance is likely to be involved in a number of disease states. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) has a widespread distribution in the body, and isoforms are recognized specifically constitutive and inducible (iNOS) forms. Both forms are cytosolic, Ca /calmodulin and NADPH-dependent, and inhibited by L-arginine derivatives. Induction of iNOS is by various inflammatory cytokines, particularly those stimulated by bacterial lipopolysaccarides, including tumour necrosis factor a. interferon 7 and interleukin 1 p. Induction of iNOS only is inhibited by GLUCOCORTICOIDS.

Most methylated amino acids and betaines occur in the free state. L- -iV-Tri-methyllysine, different L-arginine derivatives methylated in the guanidine group, and others, however, are constituents of various proteins and polypeptides. Methylation of these residues may occur at the polypeptide level. After degradation of the methylated proteins the methylated amino acids liberated are excreted with the urine (E 1). 

According to the results obtained, Sajewicz et al. [17] suggested the mechanism of ion-pair formation. These authors [ 17] hypothesized that L-arginine-derived anion interacts via hydrogen bonding with either of the two propranolol antipodes and affords the two pseudo-diastereoisomers with different values of their thermodynamic equilibrium constants.
