Consequently, I was especially receptive to the invitation from the Editors of Advances in Organometallic Chemistry to write an historical review of our researches involving boranes in organic chemistry. Perhaps we will witness a renewed effort to acquaint the student with the historical background so that he can face the problems of the present and the future with a greater confidence based upon some knowledge of how these problems were faced and often overcome by earlier workers. 

To the Editor Dr. Thomas L. Perry s war-protest letter requested constructive suggestions of the Journal readers. I should like to ask him "constmctive to whose way of thinking ". His knowledge of such places as Fort Detrick and Edgewood Arsenal seems rather remarkable for a pure scientist. I am certain that the majority of American medical researchers do not have this feel for these installations, let alone similar Canadian military bases. 

With this book, the editors, who also contributed chapters of their own, have succeeded to convene leading experts in the growing new field of epigenetic drug design and have thus made it possible for everyone entering the field to start off with a sound base of knowledge. 

The editors have assembled a panel of international experts knowledgeable about the intricacies of molecular medicine. This book is an essential guide to aspiring entrants in the various aspects of nucleic acid based-therapeutics as well as a refresher to those scientists already in the gene therapy field. 

The advantage to this type of approach, as opposed to a procedural approach, is that if the system is well designed, then the expert s knowledge can be maintained fairly easily, just by altering whichever rules need to be altered. Definitely, many rule-based systems come along with a rules editor that allows for rules to be easily maintained by nontechnical people. 

In terms of the chemicals, we the editors of this book made a personal selection based on our own knowledge of those with relatively high toxicity, exposure, production, controversy, newsworthiness, or other interest. The chemicals do not represent a merger of regulatory lists or databases of chemicals they are what we consider to be, for one reason or another, chemicals of concern to toxicology. The book was not intended as a large-scale compendium of toxic chemicals, several of which already exist. 

NEXPERT OBJEXT represented domain specihc knowledge explicitly as networks of rules and class-object hierarchies. The rule-based and object-based representations are tightly integrated in a common design environment and are supported by visual editors and graphical browsers.
