Kidneys technetium complexes

Several hydrophilic, anionic technetium complexes can be used to perform imaging studies of the kidneys. Tc-Mertiatide (Fig. 5a) is rapidly excreted by active tubular secretion, the rate of which is a measure of kidney function. Tc-succimer (Fig. 5b), on the other hand, accumulates in kidney tissue thus providing an image of kidney morphology. 

The use of heparinized catheters for in vivo erythrocyte labelling with " Tc-pyrophosphate occasionally produces adverse reports, such as diminution of cardiac activity and increase of renal activity due to the formation of a technetium-heparin complex which localizes avidly in the kidneys. A few cases reported the possibility of reaction of radiopharmaceuticals with the components of a syringe or needle. 

The development of technetium agents for imaging the brain, heart and kidneys has prompted the study of a range of Tc(V) 0X0 complexes, many of which are square-based pyramidal and contain a tetradentate ligand, often a mixed S- and A -donor the oxo ligand occupies the apical site. Complexes 22.34 and 22.35 (in their Tc forms, see Boxes 2.3 and 22.7) are examples of radiopharmaceuticals used as kidney and brain imaging agents respectively, ...
