Stop controls should bring the equipment to a safe condition in a safe manner. Emergency stop controls are intended to effect a rapid response to potentially dangerous situations and should be easily reached and activated. Common types are mushroom-headed buttons (see Fig. 1.5), bars, levers, kick plates or pressure-sensitive cables. 

These are represented by classes D and A respectively in Fig. 4.4. The first category includes parts which could impact the driver in a collision, such as B pillar covers and the lower part of the instrument panel, and its adjacent trim panels. Unreinforced ABS and a variety of PP copolymers are commonly used for these components. The same tough, resilient materials are used for the components which need protection from the passengers feet (seat valances, kick plates), or from their golf clubs (boot liners). Door pulls arc also usually moulded from unmodified PP copolymers. Figure 4.7 shows a variety of interior panels in PP.

Positive pumps are normally fitted with relief valves. These are not usually fitted to centrifugal pumps unless the process material is likely to explode if it gets too hot. As an alternative to a relief valve, such pumps may be fitted with a high-temperature trip. This isolates the power supply. Or a kick-back, a small-diameter line (or a line with a restrietion orifice plate) leading from the delivery line baek to the suction vessel, may be used. The line or orifice plate is sized so that it will pass just enough liquid to prevent the pump from overheating. Small-diameter tines are better than restriction orifice plates as they are less easily removed. 

Nicotinic toxicity Nicotine is commonly used in the form of chewing gum and transder-mal patches by smokers trying to kick the habit and is still used also in some insecticides. Toxic effects include CNS stimulation (including convulsions), ganglionic stimulation, and neuromuscular end plate depolarization leading to fasciculations and paralysis. 

Stop/start - the machine shown is switched on by a shrouded pushbutton starter with a cover plate which can be padlocked to prevent unauthorised access. A mushroom-headed stop button is situated on the starter, and the machine can also be sivitched off using the emergency kick-stop switch at the front of the base.
