Kennedy, Joseph

From 1903 until his death in 1930, Kennedy Joseph Previte Orton108 held the Chair of Chemistry, and the women chemists who came to Bangor all undertook research with him (including Phyllis McKie, see Chap. 12). Orton was a strong believer in the historical context of chemistry, and a quote by one of his obituarists is of note as it mentions the book written by Ida Freund (see Chap. 6) ... [Pg.297]

M Edwin Mattison McMillan (1907- M 1991 Nobel Prize for chemistry 1951), together with Arthur C. Wahl and Joseph W. Kennedy. Bombardment of 238U with cyclotron-accelerated deuterons gave rise to the isotope 238Pu after some intermediates. [Pg.83]

Huntington disease (HD) is the prototypic disease caused by expansion of unstable GAG repeat. It primarily affects striatal neurons. It is a mid-life onset disorder characterized by unvoluntary movements (chorea), personality changes and dementia that progress to death within 10-20 years of onset. There are currently no treatment to delay or prevent appearance of the symptoms in the patients. Other diseases in this class include spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) 1, 2, 3 (also known as Machado-Joseph disease, MJD), 6, and 7, DRPLA, and spinobulbar muscular atrophy (SMA, also known as Kennedy s disease) (Zoghbi and Orr 2000). [Pg.271]

Plutonium - the atomic number is. 94 and the chemical symbol is Pu. The name derives from the planet Pluto, (the Roman god of the underworld). Pluto was selected because it is the next planet in the solar system beyond the planet Neptime and the element plutonium is the next element in the period table beyond neptunium. Plutonium was first synthesized in 1940 by American chemists Glenn T. Seaborg, Edwin M. McMillan, Joseph W. Kennedy and Arthur C. Wahl in the nuclear reaction U( H, 2n) Np = P => Pu. The longest half-life associated with this unstable element is 80 million year Pu. [Pg.16]
