In 1919 on the advice of Professor James Kendall, Rideal was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Illinois, returning in 1920 to the Humphrey Owen Jones Lectureship in physical chemistry at Cambridge and a Fellowship at his old College, Trinity Hall. On the boat he met the charming American lady, Peggy, whom he married in 1921. At this time he started research in Lowry s laboratory, his first student being R. G. W.

When Hirst arrived in Edinburgh, Professor James Kendall, F. R. S., was the Head of the Department. On Kendall s retirement in 1959, Hirst took over this major responsibility, and helped to plan and co-ordinate the steady growth of the Department, in terms of numbers of staff and students, and in respect of accommodation, including the adaptation of parts of the original building. 

With the publication of the eleventh volume of Advances in Chemical Engineering the Board of Editors takes pleasure in piping aboard a new and able captain James Wei, the Warren Kendall Lewis Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The senior members of the present Board have served as pilots since 1956 it is time for them to rest upon their oars. They are most happy that the publishers have accepted as the new Editor in Chief the man they have recommended.
