Journey structure

Write brief descriptions, using the present tense, of two quite different main characters as they go about their lives. Be sure to choose characters that engage you and situations you know something about. End each description with an encounter or incident that would make for a change in the character s situation. Set up one synopsis as if for a short script in which you employ the journey structure, and the other for a screenplay in which you use the ritual occasion. At this point, don t concern yourself with plot, although if ideas occur to you, be sure to jot them down for possible later use. Here are a couple of examples to illustrate we turned to the short films described above for inspiration ... [Pg.15]

Callie Khouri chose the journey structure to tell her story. Thelma and Louise is a direct descendant of such films as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Bonnie and Clyde, just as these are descendants of classics like They Drive by Night. The originality of the film and much of its energy stem from its humorous, sympathetic, and totally unsentimental portrayal of Khouri s protagonists, the two characters whom she discovered and explored, her "two women on a crime binge."... [Pg.37]

Part of the secret of the book s success is Bunyan s ability to exploit the potential of the journey structure. At one level it is quite rigid and imsubtle. [Pg.88]

This thesis contributes to the knowledge of catalysis in water, us it describes an explorative journey in the, at the start of the research, unh odded field of catalysis of Diels-Alder reactions in aqueous media. The discussion will touch on organic chemistry, coordination chemistry and colloid chemistry, largely depending upon the physical-organic approach of structural variation for the elucidation of the underlying mechanisms and principles of the observed phenomena. [Pg.2]

As soon as we start this journey into the atom, we encounter an extraordinary feature of our world. When scientists began to understand the composition of atoms in the early twentieth century (Section B), they expected to be able to use classical mechanics, the laws of motion proposed by Newton in the seventeenth century, to describe their structure. After all, classical mechanics had been tremendously successful for describing the motion of visible objects such as balls and planets. However, it soon became clear that classical mechanics fails when applied to electrons in atoms. New laws, which came to be known as quantum mechanics, had to be developed. [Pg.125]

The creation of a layered structure that includes one or more hidden layers of nodes as well as input and output layers takes us halfway along the road to a more versatile network the journey is completed by the introduction of a more responsive activation function. [Pg.28]

The journey that each spermatozoon must take prior to ejaculation is presented in a linear manner in Figure 19.3. This emphasises that the journey is long. It is approximately 20 cm, but the spermatozoon contributes little, if at all, to the transport, which is achieved by pressure of fluid and actions of ciha lining, some of the tubes through which it passes. A cell about 4 pm long must be transported in a fluid enviromnent containing many other identical cells, for a distance, almost 50,000 times longer than itself. Yet it must be structurally and biochemically able to travel a... [Pg.431]

One of the major themes of this book jelled as I toured the cliff-side town of Positano on the Amalfi coast near Naples, where buildings grow like barnacles—from the tops of hills and down the sheer slope to the Gulf of Salerno. It suddenly hit me that behind every society was a hidden, elflike voice that whispered Build Create Build Create Moreover, some of the intricate structures I had seen during my journey were reminiscent of the sparkling, ornate palaces revealed to people under the influence of the psychoactive compound DMT (dimethyltryptamine). It seems as if DMT frees the mind to see the blueprint—hardwired by the whispering elves—instructing us to create, create, create. [Pg.342]

Of course the Tree of Life system does bear within it certain underlying philosophic and religious structures which may make it unsuited to those individuals who do not wish to work within this Kabbalistic current, and it is not in itself essential for such pathworking or inner journeys. There are other systems for understanding inner polarities and archetypal forces which arise out of the hermetic alchemical tradition and are equally valid. In the longer term I hope to be able to articulate and describe such a map of inner work which can be used to find our way easily through the experiences gained in meditation on hermetic emblems. [Pg.16]

In this chapter we deal with the entire journey of polymeric particulate solids, from the polymerization reactor to the shaped and structured finished product. The reader is referred to Chapter 1, which discusses all the processes and elementary steps involved in this journey. [Pg.144]

What is dear from this introduction is that the journey into the area of metal deposition from ionic liquids has tantalizing benefits. It is also dear that we have only just begun to scratch the surface of this topic. Our models for the physical properties of these novel fluids are only in an early state of devdopment and considerably more work is required to understand issues such as mass transport, spedation and double layer structure. Nudeation and growth mechanisms in ionic liquids will be considerably more complex than in their aqueous counterparts but the potential to adjust mass transport, composition and spedation independently for numerous metal ions opens the opportunity to deposit new metals, alloys and composite materials which have hitherto been outside the grasp of electroplaters. [Pg.13]
