Joint Education Committee

Of note was (and continues to be) the efforts of the Joint Education Committees of the Divisions of Polymer Chemistry (chaired by Eli Pearce presently chaired by Guy Donaruma) and Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry (chaired by Charles Carraher). Most of the accomplishments noted following could not have been accomplished without the joint cooperation of these two committees which acted as one "super" committee. [Pg.135]

Recognizing that insufficient attention was being given to polymer topics in the chemistry curriculum, the ACS Division of Polymer Chemistry (POLY) formed the Polymer Education Committee in 1972. Shortly thereafter they were joined in this effort by the ACS Division of Organic Coatings and Plastics (now known as the Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering or PMSE), and the committee was called JPEC, the Joint Polymer Education Committee. Over the years, the Polymer Education Committee was very active and instituted a variety of programs... [Pg.76]

Much of the activity within the ACS has focused on the Joint Polymer Education Committees largely composed of members from the Divisions of Polymer Chemistry and Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering (formerly Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry). The first standardized ACS examination in polymer chemistry was developed in 1978. A model syllabus was generated in 1980. [Pg.41]

I would like to thank the organizing committee of 7 ISCD for awarding John Butt and me the Maxsted Award for our joint authorship of the book. Activation, Deactivation and Poisoning of Catalysts. The collaboration between John and me was both educational and satisfying for me and it is noteworthy to mention that our personal friendship has survived the collaboration. [Pg.87]

The American Psychiatric Association has a similar but smaller group of volunteers in its Committee on the Psychiatric Dimensions of Disaster. The committee sponsors an introductory course on psychiatric aspects of disasters and a disaster workshop at the Annual Meeting and has developed written and audiovisual materials and distributed them to each of the Association s 77 district branches. In addition to this national level committee, many district branches have disaster committees which respond to local issues and needs. A summary of a 1996 conference on the role of psychiatrists in disasters, jointly sponsored with the American Red Cross and posted on the Internet at www.psych.org, suggested a number of initiatives aimed at educating psychiatrists about the Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Services and fostering a partnership between the two organizations. [Pg.171]

In March 1957 the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy announced plans to hold hearings to gather information and educate the public on the nature, hazards, and latest scientific assessments of radioactive fallout. It created a Special Subcommittee on Radiation, chaired by Chet Holi-field, to conduct the investigation. Holifield, a liberal Democrat from California, had taken a keen interest in nuclear energy after the explosion of the first atomic bomb and had served on the Joint Committee since its inception. He developed considerable expertise on atomic-energy issues despite his lack of a high school diploma or formal scientific... [Pg.48]
