In 2001, the European commission held a discussion to review the scientific and ethical issues surrounding embryonic stem cells and found significant differences in how countries viewed the issues. Much to the dismay of some countries within the EU, the commission recommended the use of European Commission funds for basic research, albeit with careful monitoring (84). Germany, Italy, and Spain for example ban such stem cell research within their borders, while the UK was less ethically compromised. Various groups in the EU mobilized to ban such research throughout the member countries. [Pg.99]
