Evaporite Basin Sulfur Deposits. Elemental sulfur occurs in another type of subsurface deposit similar to the salt-dome stmctures in that the sulfur is associated with anhydrite or gypsum. The deposits are sedimentary, however, and occur in huge evaporite basins. It is befleved that the sulfur in these deposits, like that in the Gulf Coast salt domes, was derived by hydrocarbon reduction of the sulfate material and assisted by anaerobic bacteria. The sulfur deposits in Italy (Sicily), Poland, Iraq, the CIS, and the United States (western Texas) are included in this category. 

Caprolactam was first successfully polymerized to Pedon in 1938 by I. G. Farben and the associated technology was acquired as a part of postwar reparations by the Western AUies and the former USSR (1). By 1965 other countries, eg, Italy and Japan, had developed their own caprolactam processes, each involving nitrosation of an aUphatic ring. 

There have been suggestions of alterations in sex ratios following accidental environmental exposure to dioxin in Seveso, Italy, in 1976. Between 1977 and 1984, 74 births occurred in the most heavily contaminated zone which showed an excess of females (26 males and 48 females born). Preliminary evidence suggests that the excess was associated with high dioxin exposure in both parents. Over a later period, between 1985 and 1994, the ratio declined (60 males and 64 females) and was no longer statistically significant.

In the Multicenter Acute Stroke Trial Italy (MAST-I) study, 622 patients were randomized in a 2 X 2 factorial design to receive either a 1-hour infusion of 1.5 lU streptokinase or 300 mg aspirin or both, or neither. Streptokinase (alone or with aspirin) was associated with a greater number of fatahties at 10 days (OR 2.7,95% Cl 1.7. 3). In MAST-I, neither aspirin monotherapy nor combination therapy reduced the primary outcome of combined 6-month fatahty and severe disability.

In Europe in 1996, the largest area devoted to organic arable crops was in Denmark (91000 ha), with Italy next (62000 ha) and then France (34000 ha). This compares with 4800 ha devoted to organic arable crops in Great Britain (Foster Lampkin, 1999). However, by 2003 this had increased dramatically to 44413 ha (Soil Association, 2003). Changes in crop areas are shown in Table 5.1. Of the total crop area of 4 515 000 ha in 1996, wheat occupied 44% of the area. The area of spring barley had decreased by nearly 50% from the 1988 figure. 

Verro et al. [53] evaluated the risk associated with the presence of alachlor herbicide in surface waters (released by drift and runoff) from Lombardia region (Northern Italy). They applied a GIS-based model for representing the obtained PECs in risk maps showing a static image of a worst-case simulation in each river subbasin.

In Gubbio, Italy, a 1 cm layer of clay between extensive limestone formations marks the boundary between the Cretaceous and Tertiary Periods. This clay layer was known to have been deposited about 65 million years ago when many life forms became extinct, but the length of time associated with the deposition was not known. In an attempt to measure this time with normally deposited meteoritic material as a clock, extensive measurements of iridium abundances (and those of many other elements) were made on the Gubbio rocks. Neutron activation analysis was the principal tool used in these studies. About 50 elements were searched for in materials like the earth s crust, about 40 were detected and about 30 were measured with useful precision [26-28]2.
