Isothermal thickening

Wunderlich30 and Zubov33 suppose that ECC under high pressures occur as a result of an isothermal thickening of folded-chain lamellae. However, this contradicts the later data of Wunderlich and of Japanese authors31 who have shown that folded-chain crystals (FCC) are formed after ECC, when the melt is cooled. According to Kawai22, crystallization under hydrostatic compression can he considered as a variant of the bicomponent crystallization. [Pg.216]

This shows that by means of synchrotron radiation, for the first time the primary lamellar thickening on melt crystallization in polyethylene could be observed. This enabled also the determination of the true crystal thickness as a function of supercooling AT. Most satisfyingly it was found to be closely identical to that obtained in solution crystallization were no isothermal thickening takes place. In conclusion, the hitherto existing gap between melt and solution crystallization has been removed and the corresponding f versus AT curves brought in coincidence. [Pg.41]

An inversion in the growth rate of methoxy terminated poly(ethylene oxide), with a molecular weight of 3000 has been reported. (317) The inversion occurred in a 1 °C temperature range where both extended and folded crystallites are observed. The isothermal thickening that takes place here can easily influence the growth rate... [Pg.182]

The interest at this point is limited to the influence of isothermal thickening on the kinetics. The structural and morpholc ical changes that occur on thickening, as well as theoretical interpretations of the process, will be discussed in Volume 3. [Pg.382]
