Isolating carbon

Neither sodium borohydride nor lithium aluminum hydride reduces isolated carbon-carbon double bonds This makes possible the selective reduction of a carbonyl group m a molecule that contains both carbon-carbon and carbon-oxygen double bonds... [Pg.631]

It would be fitting at this stage to define in detail the various carbon species for this review, as often different terms are used in the literature. A representation of the various carbon species is shown in Figure 4.2. Surface carbide or atomic carbon can be defined as isolated carbon atoms with only carbon-metal bonds, resulting from CO dissociation or disproportionation, the latter of which is not favored on cobalt at normal FTS conditions. Recent theoretical and experimental work has indicated that the CO dissociation is preferred at the step sites, so absorbed surface carbide is expected to be located near these sites.44-46... [Pg.54]

A final example in Table X shows the log P computation which CLOGP-3 performs on atrazine. If the three Isolating Carbon atoms in the ring were truly isolating, the negative fragments would predominate and a value of -1.15 would be obtained. The... [Pg.222]

The domain of hydrides and complex hydrides is reduction of carbonyl functions (in aldehydes, ketones, acids and acid derivatives). With the exception of boranes, which add across carbon-carbon multiple bonds and afford, after hydrolysis, hydrogenated products, isolated carbon-carbon double bonds resist reduction with hydrides and complex hydrides. However, a conjugated double bond may be reduced by some hydrides, as well as a triple bond to the double bond (p. 44). Reductions of other functions vary with the hydride reagents. Examples of applications of hydrides are shown in Procedures 14-24 (pp. 207-210). [Pg.22]

The reduction of an isolated carbon-carbon double bond by other methods is exceptional. Occasionally an isolated double bond has been reduced elec-Irolylicolly 344 and by dissolving melols. Sodium under special conditions -using tert-butyl alcohol and hexamethylphosphoramide as solvents - reduces alkenes and cycloalkenes in 40-100% yields [345. 3-Methylenecholestane, for example, afforded 3-methylcholestane in 74% yield on heating for 2 hours at 55-57° with lithium in ethylenediamine [346]. [Pg.41]

It is now possible to solve the secular determinant for the energy levels of these 7t orbitals with the assumptions already listed (Sec. II.A). For simplicity, overlap is neglected, and if Q denotes the Coulomb term of an isolated carbon 2pn atomic orbital, we put W—Q — E. Then the determinant Hjj-SUE =0 may be evaluated using the above symmetry orbitals. For example, the matrix element //13 is obtained as follows ... [Pg.40]

Disulphur Dithiocyanate, S (SCN)2, is formed 3 by the interaction of sulphur chloride and a metalliclthiocyanate, the best and most uniform results being obtained when mercuric thiocyanate is used. Chloroform or carbon tetrachloride forms a suitable solvent if the product is only required in solution, since these do not dissolve mercury salts if the compound is to be isolated, carbon disulphide is the required solvent. Disulphur dithiocyanate forms colourless crystals which melt at —3-3° C., forming a viscous, yellow, odourless liquid, which is somewhat unstable. On cautious heating it becomes dark yellow, then red, and finally detonates. It is hydrolysed by water according to the equations ... [Pg.278]
