Isolation and Double Insulation Another form of physical control is separating energized portions of electrical equipment from those parts people can contact This is isolation. Several means can accomplish isolation. Covering conductors with nonconductive materials keeps people from contacting them. This is insulation. Another method is to provide two layers of enclosure for energized parts. At least one of the layers must be nonconductive and the nonconductive layer must separate a user from possible contact with any energized part. This is double insulation. Most portable power tools (drills, saws, etc.) have internal parts that cannot energize any portion of the external surface. [Pg.146]

The definition above is a particularly restrictive description of a nanocrystal, and necessarily limits die focus of diis brief review to studies of nanocrystals which are of relevance to chemical physics. Many nanoparticles, particularly oxides, prepared dirough die sol-gel niediod are not included in diis discussion as dieir internal stmcture is amorjihous and hydrated. In temperate climates extracts from some plants were found to be excellent preservatives for hides and skins. The hides, with or without hair, were placed in pits in the ground, then covered with alternating layers of bark or leaves and skins. Water was added and later, ie, days or months depending on the thickness of the hide, the hides could be removed, washed, and oiled. The resulting leather is flexible and lasts essentially forever. This procedure was used well into the seventeenth century as the most common method of tanning. In some isolated primitive societies, the method is used in the 1990s. [Pg.80]

Serviceability. ServiceabiUty is defined as the degree of ease (or difficulty) with which a system can be repaired. This measure specifically considers fault detection, isolation, and repair. RepairabiUty considers only the actual repair time, and is defined as the probabiUty that a failed system is restored to operation in a specified interval of active repair time. Most rotating equipment includes electric motors or steam dryers that generate noise at a constant frequency. Air cooler fans are a source of noise that can be reduced by lowering the fan speed and increasing the number of blades. Pump motor noise can be reduced by including a shroud or fan cover that is accurately lined. Metal surfaces in a well-designed, well-operated cooling water system will establish an equilibrium with the environment by forming a coating of protective corrosion product. This covering effectively isolates the metal from the environment, thereby stifling additional corrosion.
