Irrecoverable losses

Working loss The irrecoverable loss of weight or yardage of a textile material that occurs during a textile process. 

The MZFR prototype reactor has now been operating for about two years. Could the Authors please indicate (a) the observed rate of loss of heavy water from the circuit (b) the resultant irrecoverable loss of heavy water (c) the amount of heavy water which is Isotoplcally diluted ... 

Recent improvements have been made to the RELAP5-3D computer code by the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to facilitate modehng the closed-loop Brayton system. A compressor component is now available which can represent the expected performance maps of the compressor (Fisher et al., 2005). Also, the turbine component has been expanded to accept variable inlet irrecoverable loss factor and efficiency values to ensure the turbine performance follows the desired performance maps. This code change to the turbine component was completed internally at Bechtel Bettis, Inc. The tuibine component changes have been provided to the INL for incorporation into a future release of RELAP5-3D. 

The flow areas and hydraulic diameters are based on sizing studies performed by 6RC and documented in Reference 12-6. For the gas side of the gas cooler, the relationship between the irrecoverable loss factor (JC) and Reynolds number are shown below. The irrecoverable loss factor is obtained as a function of Reynolds number per Reference 12-10 modified with a constant multiplier of 4712 in order to match the pressure drops supplied by GRC. 

This relation matches the desired friction factors to within +9/-15% over the entire range of data (Reynolds numbers of 200 to 4000). However, in order to match the state point pressure drop supplied by GRC, the constant (2.085) in the irrecoverable loss factor is increased to 95.56.

In contrast, palladium loss, another cause of deactivation, is not as fast, but is irrecoverable. This loss decreases gradually in the course of processing, in some cases reaching near-constant behavior. 

The volume deformations of concrete are shrinkage, which occurs under drying conditions, and creep, which is the additional deformation obtained under an applied stress. Creep does occur under saturated conditions (basic creep) but increases considerably under conditions of moisture loss. The picture is rather complicated in that creep is made up of a recoverable and irrecoverable portion on removal of the applied stress. 

If you want to use the set-up as is and ignore the problem, tune the probe to maximize the received signal by looking, for example, at the detected signal from a dip meter. The loss in S/N of the received signal due to an improperly tuned probe is irrecoverable while that is not so for the transmitter pulse. In principle, an inadequate amplitude due to inefficient coupling between the transmitter and the coil can be overcome by simply having a more powerful transmitter.

Modulus the ratio of stress to strain, which is a measure of stiffness of a polymer. A high modulus polymer is stiff and has very low elongation. Some systems, especially solutions of high molecular weight or cross-linked polymers, show complex behavior under stress. They posses an elastic modulus, G, and a loss modulus, G", representing the recoverable and irrecoverable strain, respectively.

The geometric shape of the electrode influences the current distribution too. Only a hemispherical metal electrode on the surface of a flat insulator of infinite extent (Fig. 4.3) has exactly uniform primary current distribution across the surface [11]. This was the type of electrode used by Brummer and Turner to estimate the maximum surface redox limits for platinum, considering the size of their electrode carrier [4-6]. Nonspherical electrodes may be operating irreversibly even when established safe stimulation parameters are used [14], With the addition of microstructures (micro-post structures) on the electrode surface, current crowding tends to occur near the sharp convex corners. The increased current density at these sites leads to higher irrecoverable charge loss and more corrosion [10].

It is commonly referred to as the out-of-phase and imaginary modulus (see Argand diagram representation ). It is proportional to the amount of energy lost and irrecoverable in a sample.
