Sodium bicarbonate Iron compounds

The nitroparaffins are condensed with aldehydes to yield nitro alcohols (70-80%), which on acetylation and treatment with an aqueous methanolic solution of sodium bicarbonate are converted to nitroolefins (80-84%). These compounds are reduced to the corresponding ketoximes by zinc and acetic acid (50-60%). Reduction with iron and dilute hydrochloric acid gives good yields of either ketones or ketoximes, depending upon the amount of hydrochloric acid used. The ketoximes can be hydrolyzed to ketones by refluxing with dilute sulfuric acid in the presence of formalin, which acts as a hydroxylamine acceptor (80%). The over-all yields from the nitroolefins are 40-60%. In this manner, certain otherwise difficultly obtainable ketones are prepared. Semicarbazones have been converted to ketones by treatment with sodium nitrite in glacial acetic acid, with aqueous oxalic acid, or with phthalic anhydride. ... [Pg.620]

The anhydrous salt [Co(NH3)g][Co(C03)3] made by the method of McCutcheon and Schule or more simply by adding [Co(NHj)gPC3 to a green solution prepared by Procedure 1, is much more stable when it is dry. The compound is soluble to the extent of only ca. 0.04 g per 100 cm of water at room temperature, the solution being quite unstable. However, the compound is ten times more soluble in an aqueous solution of potassium or sodium bicarbonate. Baur and Bricker used this compound as a reagent for titrimetric oxidation the compound is a very weak oxidant in bicarbonate media, but in an acid solution the cobalt(III) in the [Co(C03)3] portion is released and reacts quantitatively with reductants such as iron(II), vanadium(IV) and cerium(III). [Pg.28]

Simpler tropolones are soluble in aqueous sodium bicarbonate. They form coloured products with iron(III) chloride and form chelates with many metals. In solution, particularly in the presence of stxiium bicarbonate. the salt will darken on standing (see salicylic acid). This darkening may be lessened by the addition of sodium sulfite or sodium bisulfite. Also, use of recently boiled distilled water and dispensing in amber-colored bottles lessens color change.
