A positive displacement gas compressor can be constructed with a pair of nesting volutes, one stationary and one orbiting (see Figure 4.17). Gas enters from the surrounding enclosure (Figure 4.17a), is trapped between the volutes and moved inwards (a, b, c, d etc.)...

In order to understand the physical structure of the progenitor of SN 1987A, models have been constructed which match the radius, effective temperature, and luminosity of SK -69 202 by integrating the equations of stellar structure inward from the surface. The composition is assumed to be X = 0.70, Y = 0.295, and Z = 0.005 for most of the models, although the sensitivity to changes in X, Y, and Z has been explored. Details will be presented in Barkat and Wheeler (1988). 

Tomalia s exhaustive review paper with coloured illustrations [10] did much to popularise the highly branched compounds and to ensure broad general acceptance of the family name dendrimers . In the same year, Frechet and Hawker described the first convergent synthesis of dendrimers. They constructed poly(aryl ether) architectures from the outside inwards (Fig. 1.6 see Section 2.2) [15]. 

In a traditional tidal energy plant, a dam is constructed that captures tides as they flow inward. When the tide goes out, water behind the dam is released which powers a turbine in a manner similar to traditional hydroelectric power generation. These systems work best when there is a dramatic difference, at least 16 feet, between low tide and high tide.

The explosion resulted in construction trailers having their sides bowed inward and significant window damages at a distance of 1200 ft. (365) and as far away as 3,000 ft. (900 m). The explosion occurred on a plant holiday. If it had been a regular work day, many more injuries could have occurred within the unit and in a neighboring office building located 500 ft (150 m) from the epicenter of the blast. 

An axoneme grows from a preexisting structure called the basal body which appears to be similar in construction to a centriole in the centromere [Pig. 5-36( ). The basal body consists of nine triplet sets of microtubules cross-linked by proteins at regular intervals. There are no central microtubules, but protein spokes radiating inward to a central "hub" can be seen in some cross-sections.
