In terms of the product life cycle analysis, a new product or polymer would generally require about thirty years from the research and development stage before becoming a commodity product when millions of tonnes are produced annually for mainstream application. Introduction and Commercial Application This section provides an overview of the activities carried out at the various stages of field development. Each activity is driven by a business need related to that particular phase. The later sections of this manual will focus in some more detail on individual elements of the field life cycle. 

In the pioneer work of Foster the correction due to film thinning had to be neglected, but with the coming of the BET and related methods for the evaluation of specific surface, it became possible to estimate the thickness of the adsorbed film on the walls. A number of procedures have been devised for the calculation of pore size distribution, in which the adsorption contribution is allowed for. All of them are necessarily somewhat tedious and require close attention to detail, and at some stage or another involve the assumption of a pore model. The model-less method of Brunauer and his colleagues represents an attempt to postpone the introduction of a model to a late stage in the calculations. 

The Federal Food, Dmg and Cosmetic (FDAC) Act defines dmgs as "...articles intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man..." and "articles (other than food) intended to affect the stmcture of any function of the body of man." In the United States and elsewhere, the introduction of a new dmg is subject to a sequence of weU-defined stages of development and approval (4). Each stage involves either scientific testing or submission and preparation of data and analysis review (Fig. 2). 

The main advantages of the ms/ms systems are related to the sensitivity and selectivity they provide. Two mass analyzers in tandem significantly enhance selectivity. Thus samples in very complex matrices can be characterized quickly with Htde or no sample clean-up. Direct introduction of samples such as coca leaves or urine into an ms or even a gc/lc/ms system requires a clean-up step that is not needed in tandem mass spectrometry (28,29). Adding the sensitivity of the electron multiplier to this type of selectivity makes ms/ms a powerhil analytical tool, indeed. It should be noted that introduction of very complex materials increases the frequency of ion source cleaning compared to single-stage instmments where sample clean-up is done first.
