Intrinsic resolution

Resolution is without question a key element in accurate and detailed particle characterization. Particle populations that cannot be resolved cannot, in any sense, be distinguished from one another. While deconvolution techniques can provide particle size distribution curves from low resolution systems, the deconvolution must be based on assumptions about instrumental band broadening and band shape. In general, any detailed information lost because of poor resolution cannot be recovered by mathematical manipulation alone. In all cases, the quality of a size distribution curve will increase with the intrinsic resolution exhibited by the system. [Pg.220]

Intrinsic resolution, R, is defined by the minimum line width at half height, Avi/2, of the CoHft signal in a CDCI3 solution 60 to 80 Hz are typical values observed in lignin spectra, much higher than instrument specifications. [Pg.145]

Detector size One factor that greatly affects the spatial resolution is the intrinsic resolution of the scintillation detectors used in the PET scanner. For multidetector PET scanners, the intrinsic resolution (Rf) is related to the detector size d. R, is normally given by d/2 on the scanner axis at midposition between the two detectors and by d at the face of either detector. Thus it is best at the center of the FOV and deteriorates toward the edge of the FOV. For a 6-mm detector, the Ri value is mm at the center of the FOV and 6mm toward the edge of the FOV. In addition, aspect ratio considerations, dependent on mechanical stability and pattern collapse propensity of resist lines, limit the thickness of resists designed for these technology nodes to ultrathin resist thickness regimes ( 100 nm and lower). However, the aspect ratio considerations must be balanced against the etch stability requirements that ensure successful pattern transfer to underlying substrates in a device. Both the aspect ratio and etch stability requirements must be balanced against the intrinsic resolution, particularly pitch resolution, of the resist in question.
