The link between intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) and tamsulosin has been reviewed [97 ]. In a review of 1163 charts, 59 patients (81 eyes) who were taking tamsulosin at the time of surgery were identified the incidence of IFIS was 30%. Among those who received prophylactic intracameral lido-caine + adrenaline, the incidence was 39%. The incidence of IFIS was 45% in eyes with a preoperative dilated pupU diameter smaller than 6.5 mm and 22% in eyes with a preoperative dilated pupU diameter larger than 6.5 mm [98 ]. An immunohistochemical analysis has confirmed the presence of qcia-adrenoceptors in the human iris [99 ].

Sensory systems Eyes Tamsulosin and other alpha-1 antagonists have been associated with intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS). A recent review compared the incidence of IFK in patients using tamsulosin and other chronic medications [35 ]. In a review of 1530 subjects who xmderwent phacoemulsification, 80% of cxn-rent tamsulosin users, 60% of previous tamsulosin users, 1% of patients on other chronic medications including antihypertensives, antipsychotics, antidiabetics and 1.7% of those on no medications at all had IFCS. The authors concluded that while IFCS was most likely associated with tamsulosin, it was also observed among patients on other chronic drugs like metformin, lisinopril and aspirin. The predisposing factors to IFCS for patients on these medications need to be elucidated.
