Values intervention

The determination of total amounts in soil is valid for finding whether there are toxic levels of certain metals (e.g. after repeated slurry applications), and comparisons can be made with published tables of maximum recommended levels. Some typical and maximum values are shown in Table 4.5 (ADAS, 1987 DOE/NWC, 1981). Dutch values differ from those developed in the UK in that the intention is to allow the return of contaminated land to any potential use, rather than tailoring the level of remediation to the intended use of the land. The most recent values include general targets and intervention values (httpy/www.athene.freeserve.co.uk/sanaterre/guidelines/dutch.htm). [Pg.54]

In 1994, intervention values (IVs), target values (TVs) and the methodology to determine the urgency of remediation were formalized in the SPA. The TVs and IVs specify the levels of slightly and seriously contaminated soil, respectively... [Pg.269]

The three fields (A, B and C) clearly demonstrated a trend in contamination levels for most metals, both for total and pore water concentrations (Table 9.2). Chromium concentrations were above the intervention values (IV) for soil. Copper and zinc concentrations were slightly lower than the IV, still indicating significant contamination. Soil pH was similar at all locations, but organic matter content was higher for field C, corresponding to the former inlet of the sewage. [Pg.282]

Under the Wbb contamination caused after 1 January 1987 should be cleaned up as quickly as possible, irrespective of the concentrations encountered and the risk of the pollutants .15 Historic (pre-1987) contamination still requires management and the Dutch Intervention Values were introduced in 1994 to assist. Intervention values are a numeric value above which there is serious contamination and the... [Pg.92]

The heavily contaminated soil underneath and around the laundry acted and is still acting as a source for the downstream groundwater contanaination. In this groundwater plume, C-DCE and VC were found in concentrations above the Dutch intervention value at a distance of 300 m from the laundry and at a depth of 11m bgs. [Pg.360]

In the Netherlands, probit functions are used in a quantitative risk analysis (QRA) to predict the number of acute fatalities caused by an accidental release of toxic substances (RIVM 2009). A probit function describes the lethality rate as a function of any given combination of the exposure concentration and the duration of exposure for a specific substance. Hmnan probit functions are derived from acute inhalation toxicity data obtained in animals. These toxicity data are also used in other frameworks, including (1) the determination of intervention values for dangerous substances, (2) the classification of substances for transport QRAs, and (3) the determination of threshold values for the selection of plants relevant to a QRA. [Pg.1047]
