International Conference programmes

Further evidence was presented at the second international conferences for improving the use of medicines held in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2004 respectively (URL http //www.icium.org). On the basis of this evidence the second conference issued a major recommendation for countries to have national programmes to promote rational use of medicines. The conference further recommended that such programmes should be based on coordinated implementation of sustainable multi-faceted interventions, scaled up to the national level and with inbuilt systems for monitoring medicines use in order to evaluate progress.

The WHO International Programme on the Health Effects of the Chernobyl Accident (IPHECA) The results of the IPHECA project were recently published and discussed at the WHO International Conference on the Health Consequences of the Chernobyl and other Radiological Accidents, held in Geneva, 20-23 November 1995. IPHECA generally confirmed the conclusions of the ICP and provided additional information on the increase in child thyroid cancer incidence foreseen by the ICP. 

The SAICM operates under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and promotes international action on chemical hazards. The SAICM was adopted by the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) in 2006 to further the goal that chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on the environment and human health by 2020.

In the past it has been difficult to satisfy in a single test programme the requirements for the EU, the USA and Japan. However, following the 1992 International Conference on Harmonisation, tripartite stability recommendations have been produced which have considerably simplified the situation (Table 3.9), laying down storage conditions and means of evaluating results.
