Interlock, interlocking enclosure/guard

Protection against direct contact with live parts is fulfilled in a number of ways, such as enclosures, guards, interlocks, insulation, and the use of SELV or PELV circuits. 

Interlocked barrier guard An enclosure attached to the machinery or equipment frame and interlocked with the power switch so that the operating cycle cannot be started unless the guard is in its proper position.

An enclosure attached to the frame of a machine and interlocked so that the machine cycle cannot be started normally unless the guard, including its hinged or movable sections, are in position. In some situations, movement of the guards will interrupt the machine cycle. See also Machine Guarding. 

A form of distance guard whereby access to the area of hazard of the machine is prevented since materials are passed into the machine via a metal enclosure or tunnel. It is commonly used on metal cutting machines and usually incorporates an interlock, so if the tunnel guard is raised the machine stops operating.

Some individuals in the material handling industry argue that the improvements in conveyor safety have not kept pace with improvements in other machines and processes. Some of the noticeable improvements, however, include full enclosures of pinch points such as chain and sprocket transmissions, perimeter pull cords for emergency stops, audible alarms and a delayed start-up function, pop-out rollers, improved warning labels, and interlock guards that are designed to shut off the power if removed.
