Part cures were characterized by exothermic reaction wave propagation. Figures 6a-9b show the development of the reaction waves. The waves propagate from the walls of the part towards the center. A comparison of the temperature and epoxide conversion profiles revealed that the highest temperature corresponded to the highest conversion. As the part initially heats the resin/glass matrix nearest the walls heats fastest however, as the part exotherms the temperatures in the interior of the part exceeded the wall temperatures. The center temperature does not become the hottest temperature until the waves intersect. It must be noted that the hottest temperature does not always occur at the center of the part. The wave velocities are proportional to the wall temperatures. In Figures 6a to 9b the mold temperature was 90 C and the press temperature was elevated to 115 C. Since the press does not heat the part until after it is wound, the press temperature was elevated to accelerate the reaction wave from the press so that the waves would intersect in the center of the part. [Pg.261]

No geographic structure was revealed by this analysis, with trees from Arch Cape, Oregon, Whitetish, Montana, and sites from northern British Columbia, including Queen Charlotte Islands, being closely associated. The authors remarked on the lack of differentiation between coastal and interior populations. A reinvestigation of red cedar from 55 sites (3-6 trees per site) provided a new data set that was analyzed by numerical and discriminant-function analyses (von Rudloff et al., 1988). These analyses confirmed the low intra- and interpopulational variation seen in the earlier study, but did reveal small differences between coastal and interior populations. No correlations between northern and southern populations emerged from the analyses likewise, elevation had no effect on terpene composition. [Pg.138]

For the elucidation of chemical reaction mechanisms, in-situ NMR spectroscopy is an established technique. For investigations at high pressure either sample tubes from sapphire [3] or metallic reactors [4] permitting high pressures and elevated temperatures are used. The latter represent autoclaves, typically machined from copper-beryllium or titanium-aluminum alloys. An earlier version thereof employs separate torus-shaped coils that are imbedded into these reactors permitting in-situ probing of the reactions within their interior. However, in this case certain drawbacks of this concept limit the filling factor of such NMR probes consequently, their sensitivity is relatively low, and so is their resolution. As a superior alternative, the metallic reactor itself may function as the resonator of the NMR probe, in which case no additional coils are required. Blast-Furnace Stoves Blast-furnace stoves are used to preheat the air that is blown into a blast furnace. A typical blast furnace, producing 1500 Mg (1650 U.S. ton) of pig iron per day, will be blown with 47.2 mVs (100,000 std ft /min) of atmospheric air preheated to temperatures ranging in normal practice from 755 to 922 K (900 to 1200°F). A set offour stoves is usually provided, each consisting of a vertical steel cylinder 7.3 m (24 ft) in diameter, 33 m (108 ft) nigh, topped with a spherical dome. Characteristic plan and elevation sections of a stove are shown in Fig. 24-61. The interior comprises three regions in the cylindrical portion, (1) a side combustion chamber. [Pg.54]

Organic mercury compounds have also been used in latex paint to extend the shelf life, though such uses are currently restricted in the United States following the recognition of this potential hazard to children. Subsequent evaluation of interior rooms of homes painted with mercury-containing latex paint found that mercury vapor concentrations were elevated and in several cases were above the 0.5 pg/m3 concentration recommended by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. [Pg.102]

The soil in the funnel is washed free of excess reagent by five successive additions of 95% ethanol, allowing to drain between washings. A wash bottle containing ethanol enables the interior surface of the funnel, the outside of the stem, the exposed surface of the paper and the soil to be thoroughly washed.
