Interdigitated monolayers

In contrast to the bilayer lamellar structure in the parent extended amphiphilic dendron, structural data on these hybrids suggested lamellar morphologies with an interdigitated monolayer packing of hydrophobic peripheries (see Fig. 21.6c). The... [Pg.607]

Kellay et al. [42, 67] attribute the correlation between the maximum film thickness and the minimum oil-water interfacial tension in this decane-aqueous AOT system to the presence of thermally induced fluctuations at the oil-water surface. The maximum film thickness of 7 nm suggests that alkane molecules form a film that separates a probably weakly interdigitated monolayer from the air. Kellay et al. [42, 67] assume this film has a tension equal to that of the bulk oil-air surface. We then have a thin film with one surface having a high surface tension (the oil-air... [Pg.91]

Ruths and Granick [95] have studied the self-adhesion of several monolayers and adsorbed polymers onto mica. For loose-packed monolayers, the adhesion, in excess of a constant value observed at low rate, increased as a power law with the square root of the separation rate. In the case of adsorbed diblocks, the excess adhesion increased linearly with logarithmic separation rate. The time effects were ascribed to interdigitation and interdiffusion between the contacting layers. [Pg.111]

The columnar, cuboidal basal cells are 18-20 xm in height and 8-10 iim in diameter. They form a monolayer adhered to a basement membrane by hemidesmosomes which are linked to anchoring fibrils of collagen type VII. At the lateral borders, basal cells are extensively interdigitated and joined together in places only by junctional complexes (zonula adherens), desmosomes, and gap junctions. [Pg.287]

Figure 8 Snapshot of a DPPC bilayer with a small concentration of DPPCs replaced with PyrPC probes, see Fig. 1 (26). One finds PyrPC probes (shown in dark grey) to penetrate (interdigitate) significantly into the opposing leaflet, thus causing perturbations in both membrane monolayers. Water is not shown for clarity. Figure 8 Snapshot of a DPPC bilayer with a small concentration of DPPCs replaced with PyrPC probes, see Fig. 1 (26).
