Interdiffusion, adhesive bonds

As mentioned earlier, adhesive bond formation is governed by interfacial processes occurring between the adhering surfaces. These interfacial processes, as summarized by Brown [13] include (1) van der Waals or other non-covalent interactions that form bonds across the interface (2) interdiffusion of polymer chains across the interface and coupling of the interfacial chains with the bulk polymer and (3) formation of primary chemical bonds between chains or molecules at or across the interface. [Pg.77]

The diffusion theory states that interpenetration and entanglement of polymer chains are additionally responsible for bioadhesion. The intimate contact of the two substrates is essential for diffusion to occur, that is, the driving force for the interdiffusion is the concentration gradient across the interface. The penetration of polymer chains into the mucus network, and vice versa, is dependent on concentration gradients and diffusion coefficients. As the science of adhesion has developed, various theories of adhesion have been advocated for one material or another. With wood as a substrate, mechanical interlocking, interdiffusion of polymers, intermolecular attractive forces, and covalent chemical bonding all have been proposed, either individually or collectively, to explain adhesion. In reality, no experiments reported to date have been able to disprove the existence of any one of these mechanisms, or to quantify their relative importance.
