Interdependent values

Our discussion of auctions thus far has been restricted to the private values model. It is the simplest case and one for which there are the most results. It is restrictive and there are many important environments that simply cannot be modeled using it. One such case, which we discuss briefly, is that of interdependent values. For brevity we focus on the case of two bidders and one object. This is enough to highlight all the difficulties. [Pg.278]

Much of what is known about auctions with interdependent values assumes that the signals are one dimensional. When signals are multidimensional the stoiy is more complicated. First, without severe restrictions, no auction that relies on reports of signals alone can be efficient and incentive compatible (Jehiel and Moldovanu [40]). It is useful to see why this must be the case.
