David Bender is a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry at University College London. He has written seventeen books, as well as numerous chapters and reviews, on various aspects of nutrition and nutritional biochemistry. His research has focused on the interactions between vitamin Bg and estrogens, which has led to the elucidation of the role of vitamin Be in terminating the actions of steroid hormones. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Nutrition Research Reviews. [Pg.489]

Interaction Between Vitamin E- Radicals and Ascorbate. Vitamin E and ascorbate probably act synergistically (55) that is, vitamin E acts as the primary antioxidant (particularly in biomembranes) and the resulting vitamin E- radical then reacts with ascorbate to regenerate vitamin E. That such a reaction can occur was subsequently demonstrated (56), and the reaction rate (/c42 1.55 0.2 X 10 was... [Pg.95]

These various in vitro synergistic interactions between vitamins E and C can be summed up in equations 46-48. [Pg.890]

This paper will review what is presently known about interactions between vitamins and oral contraceptives. It is clearly important to assess carefully the evidence available with regard to each vitamin and to point out that much remains to be learned about normal vitamin metabolism and the metabolic pathways in which they serve as important coenzymes. The normal metabolism of pyridoxine and folic acid will be discussed in some detail, since they have received the greatest attention by investigators. [Pg.248]

Little is to be gained by listing further instances in which these various compounds can be interchanged because the interactions between vitamin E, coenzyme Q, and selenium are still unknown [130-135]. There are two major theories the first proposes that all these compounds function in metabolism as antioxidants, protecting, for example, the integrity of the lipid membrane the second holds that these compounds react with certain apoenzymes in specific but still unknown metabolic reactions. [Pg.317]

Interaction between vitamin E and other nutrients in foods... [Pg.172]

There has been substantial attention given to the interactions between vitamin E and either selenium or vitamin C. The majority of work concerning selenium in meat-producing animals has dealt with animal disease rather than effects on quality of muscle foods. Selenium is part of the antioxidant enzyme, glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx). Yamauchi et al. (1984b) presented evidence for a compensational relationship between... [Pg.172]

Drug interactions The extent to which vitamin D supplementation alters drug effectiveness and toxicity in humans has been systematically reviewed. Bile acid sequestrants and lipase inhibitors were found to inhibit the absorption of vitamin D from the gut. Statins, rifampicin, isoniazid, hydroxychloroquine, antiepileptics, corticosteroids, immimo-suppressive and chemotherapeutic agents, antiretroviral drugs and H2 receptor antagonists interfered with vitamin D metabolism. The interaction between vitamin D and thiazide diuretics could result in hypercalcaetnia. Vitamin D supplementation decreases concentrations of atorvastatin, and could cause hypercalcaetnia in elderly individuals or tixose with compromised renal function or hyperparathyroidism [84 ]. [Pg.513]

Photoinitiated antioxidant reactions in systems modelling vitamins K and E in biological membranes were investigated by TR EPR. 1-(1,4-Naph-thoquinone-2-oxy)-6-(hydroxyl-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carbonyloxy)-hexane was used as a model for vitamins K and E concentrated in biological membranes. The broad, emissive CIDEP spectra observed in ethanol suggest a strong intramolecular interaction between vitamin K and E radicals. On the other hand, in TX-lOO micelle systems a weak interaction between these radicals was indicated. [Pg.91]

It should be an aim of future research, therefore, to separate those instances in which there is a direct interaction between vitamins, of either theoretical or practical interest, from the less important instances in which the influence of the fimt vitamin on the second is merely one out of many of its effects on metabolism as a whole. An interaction strictly confined to two vitamins, in which the requirement or the metabolism of one is considerably affected by the intake of the other, is obviously of greater interest than a less specific interrelation, in which the requirement of one vitamin is only slightly affected by the intake of any of several other vitamins. [Pg.18]
