Insulin second-generation effects

Mechanism of Action A second-generation sulfonylurea that promotes release of insulin from beta cells of the pancreas and increases insulin sensitivity at peripheral sites. Therapeutic Effect Lowers blood glucose concentration. [Pg.562]

Second-generation sulfonylureas increase tissue response to insulin and decrease glucose production by the liver resulting in greater hypoglycemic potency at smaller doses. They have a longer duration and cause few side effects, but should not be used if the patient has liver or kidney dysfunction. Sulfonylureas are ... [Pg.339]

Differences between first- and second-generation SUs have been studied recently and indicate preserved insulin responsiveness in islets incubated with gUmepiride in contrast to glibenclamide or chlorpropamide [40], Another second-generation SU, gliclazide, could even have protective effects on beta cells by reducing free radicals and thereby protecting the cells from oxidative stress [41],... [Pg.69]
