Semiconductor insulators, coating characteristics

Silicon dioxide (Si02), also known as silica, is a major industrial material with many applications particularly in the semiconductor industry in the form of coatings, which are produced mostly by CVD. It is an excellent electrical insulator with very low thermal expansion and good resistance to thermal shock. Its characteristics and properties are summarized in Table 11.4. 

Epoxy is extensively used in everyday fife in coatings, semiconductor packaging, electrical equipment, insulation, and adhesives. Because epoxy has very favorable mechanical properties and low shrinkage characteristics when cured, it has attracted much interest. However, because it is flammable, its development has been limited. In recent years, various scholars have been involved in developing flame retardants (Gao et al., 2008 Qian et al., 2011 Jeng et al., 2002 Im et al., 2010). This work develops a new flame retardant for epoxy resin. 

Studies of capacitance-voltage characteristics were done on metal insulator semiconductor (MIS) structures. The MIS structure consists of PCBM spin-coated on top of DNA-CTMA. For the metal electrode in the MIS device Cr/Au was chosen as the bottom as well as top electrode. Similarly, MIM devices were also fabricated and studied. For the MIM devices characteristics of capacitance vs frequency show no significant change in capacitance throughout the measured frequency range (see Fig. 21). On the other hand, MIS devices show rise in capacitance between frequency ranges of 10 to 10 Hz, corresponding to the dielectric relaxation of the PCBM semiconductor.
