Instrumentation emergency switching

Alarms are used to alert operators of serious, and potentially hazardous, deviations in process conditions. Key instruments are fitted with switches and relays to operate audible and visual alarms on the control panels and annunciator panels. Where delay, or lack of response, by the operator is likely to lead to the rapid development of a hazardous situation, the instrument would be fitted with a trip system to take action automatically to avert the hazard such as shutting down pumps, closing valves, operating emergency systems. 

Control can be exercised by the operator in the control roam on the well chokes and manifold divert valves (although this is normally handled by the HOC), start/atop of the oil shipping pumps, utility equipment, switching valves, gas plant feed valves, gas compressor start/stop and emergency shutdown of any production train or the entire GC. Since the closed loop process control is performed by local pneumatic instruments, all set point changes and controller troubleshooting must be accomplished locally. 

Portable valve-regulated lead-acid cells can operate in any orientation without acid leakage and find use in many different applications, such as in electronic cash registers, alarm systems, emergency lighting unit equipment, telephone boxes, switching stations, minicomputers and terminals, electronically controlled petrol pumps, cordless television sets and portable instruments and tools. 

In computer systems, program logic is an important component of the critical instrument loop. Security precautions must be taken to prevent inadvertent changes in programming. In addition, manual overrides are discouraged. For example, if it is critical to shut down a pump during an emergency situation, a manual on switch may not be desirable.
